Is Intercom Fin's AI Agent label on by default?

Last updated:

Short answer: Only for older workspaces. Intercom's documentation says the "Show AI Agent label in Messenger" toggle is on by default for workspaces that used Fin before a cut-off in July 2025, and off by default for newer ones. Its two help articles give different dates: 10 July 2025 (Intercom Help) and 30 July 2025 (Fin Help). Check the toggle in your own workspace.

Turning that label on is one of the quickest ways to show visitors they are talking to an AI, which is what Article 50(1) and 50(5) of the EU AI Act ask for: clear, distinguishable information, at the latest at the first interaction. Key point: the default tells you nothing about your workspace today. Someone may have changed the toggle since. Open your Identity settings and look.

Why Intercom's docs give two dates

Intercom publishes two help articles on this, and they disagree. We checked both on 30 October 2026.

  • Intercom Help: AI Agent disclosure (updated 30 June 2026) says the toggle is "on by default for all customers using Fin AI Agent in the Messenger up until the 10 July 2025" and off by default for everyone else.
  • Fin Help: What is AI Agent disclosure (updated 6 March 2026) says it is "On by default if you deployed Fin before July 30, 2025."
  • Intercom changelog 96733 (11 July 2025) says the toggle is "ON by default if you're already using Fin". It gives no cut-off date, so it doesn't settle 10 vs 30 July.

We can't tell which date is right, and it only matters if you started Fin in July 2025. Either way, check the setting itself.

How to check yours

To check the Fin AI Agent label, open your Identity settings, turn on "Show AI Agent label in Messenger", then confirm it appears in Messenger on your live site.

  1. Open the Identity settings. Intercom Help gives the path Fin AI Agent > Fin settings > Identity; Fin Help gives Settings > Reply Settings > Identity. Your menu may differ.
  2. Look at "Show AI Agent label in Messenger". If it's off, turn it on. When it's on, an "AI Agent" label appears after Fin's name on its replies.
  3. Check Fin's first message. Intercom's default intro is: "Hi there, you're speaking with Fin AI Agent. I'm well trained and ready to assist you today, but you can ask for the team at any time." Intercom doesn't change intros you've customised, and Fin Help says: "Workflows created before July 30, 2025 won't include the intro message." If yours doesn't, add a message step before "Let Fin answer".
  4. Open Messenger on your live site as a visitor and check that the label and first message appear.

Also look at:

  • Email answers. In Intercom Help, the toggle "Show 'Composed by AI' in email footer" is under Fin AI Agent > Fin settings > General and is on by default; keep it on. Fin Help describes the same footer as on by default for Zendesk tickets and Salesforce cases.
  • Fin's name. If you renamed Fin to a human first name, change it back or add "AI" to it.

Paste-ready first-message line

Even with the label on, Fin's first message should say it is an AI, so visitors see the disclosure before they ask anything. For example:

First message
Hi, I'm an AI assistant. I can answer most questions, or connect you with a person.

Why this still matters if Intercom is the provider

Article 50(1) formally places the transparency duty on the provider. For an off-the-shelf Fin AI Agent, that is most likely Intercom. In practice you still control what visitors see: Fin's name, avatar, greeting, Identity label, and intro settings. If the widget appears on your site under a human first name with no AI label or first-message disclosure, the gap is on your website and under your brand. For the provider-vs-deployer explanation, see does my chatbot need an AI disclosure? Breaches of Article 50 can be fined up to €15 million or 3% of worldwide annual turnover, whichever is higher (the lower of the two for SMEs), under Art. 99(4)(g) and 99(6).

What the free Article50.io scan can and can't see

A free Article50.io scan loads one public page, detects Intercom by its scripts, looks for AI-disclosure wording on the page, and, as the chat widget first loads, reads text inside chat-like frames among the first 25 frames on the page. It does not open the chat or start a conversation, so it can't see a disclosure that only appears once a conversation starts, such as Intercom's AI Agent label on Fin's replies, and may still flag the page. More detail: how the scan works.

Treat a flag as "no disclosure is visible before the chat is used," then open Messenger yourself and check the Identity label and first message. A clean result is not a compliance clearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Intercom Fin's AI Agent label on by default?

Only for workspaces that used Fin before a cut-off in July 2025. Intercom Help says 10 July 2025; Fin Help says 30 July 2025. Newer workspaces start with it off. Either way, the setting may have been changed since, so check "Show AI Agent label in Messenger" in your Identity settings and turn it on.

Why do Intercom's docs give two different dates?

We don't know. Intercom's help article 11712008 says 10 July 2025 and Fin's help article 13976073 says 30 July 2025, checked on 30 October 2026. It only matters if you started Fin in July 2025. The safe step is the same for everyone: check the toggle in your own workspace.

Is renaming Fin to "Hugo" or "Sarah" enough of a disclosure?

No. A human-sounding name suggests a person, not an AI. The Article 50(1) exception only applies where it is obvious to a reasonably well-informed, observant and circumspect person that they are dealing with an AI. Add "AI" to the name, say so in the first message, or turn on the AI Agent label.

If Intercom is the provider, do I still need to do anything?

Yes, in practice. You choose the name, greeting, Identity label and intro settings visitors see on your site. Turn the AI Agent label on if it is off, keep the "Composed by AI" email footer switched on, and put a clear AI line in Fin's first message.

Does the Article50.io free scan confirm the Fin label is on?

Not reliably. The scan reads the page and chat widget as they first load, but it does not open the chat or wait for Fin's replies, so it may miss a label that only appears once a conversation starts. Open Messenger as a visitor and check yourself. A clean result is not a compliance clearance.
