The EU AI Act is not UK law. It does not apply to a UK business just because it is in the UK. What matters is whether your AI reaches people in the EU.
Article 2 of the AI Act sets out who it covers. For a UK business, three situations matter:
If none of these apply, for example a UK-only site with no EU customers or visitors, the Act is unlikely to apply to you. If any of them might apply, keep reading.
| Your situation | Likely position |
|---|---|
| UK SaaS with an AI chatbot, selling to EU customers | Likely in scope. The chatbot talks to people in the EU. |
| UK online shop shipping to the EU, with an AI chat widget | Likely in scope for EU visitors who use the chat. |
| UK agency publishing AI-generated images or deepfakes for EU clients' audiences | Likely in scope for the labelling rules. |
| UK site serving UK customers only, no EU sales or marketing | Unlikely to be in scope. |

No. The UK left the EU, and the EU AI Act is not UK law. It can still apply to UK businesses whose AI reaches people in the EU.
If EU visitors use your chatbot, Article 50 can apply, so a clear AI disclosure at the start of the chat is the safe choice.
The same as for any business in scope: up to €15 million or 3% of worldwide annual turnover for Article 50 breaches, with the lower amount applying to SMEs.
